Welcome to Salford Methodist Circuit’s website. For some, ‘Salford’ conjures up a grim scene of terraced houses as depicted by the artist L. S. Lowry, but that is no longer a true reflection of the city. Salford is vibrant, Salford is multi-cultural and multi-faith, Salford has a lot going for it, and we in the Salford Methodist Circuit are part of those on-going developments.
The Circuit reaches from rural Glazebrook (not strictly in Salford) to Swinton and down to the inner-city developments in Langworthy and Ordsall. Worsley, where the Duke of Bridgewater built the first commercial canal, and Patricroft, through which ran the first passenger railway of Stephenson’s ‘Rocket’ fame, both lie within the Circuit. British Steel and the Co-op Margarine Works were also here, but times change.
Industry may have left its mark from the past, but Salford, and the Methodist Circuit, cannot afford to live in the past. We are challenged by the very communities in which we worship and minister. Our churches (11 in all) are looking to how they can best serve the people in the future. It is sad when buildings have to close, but if they are only there for themselves without a mission purpose, without a means of reaching out to those who live and work around them, and without sharing the message of the Christian Gospel, then their future has to be in doubt.
These are exciting and challenging times. Few people embrace change willingly, but here in the Salford Circuit we are tackling change in order to be a continuing contributor to the life of this great city.
