Potted History
August 1810 - some Height people decided that ‘We commence a Sunday School for definite religious teaching’. In March the Sunday School began in two cellars under houses on the main road on the boundary between Pendleton and Pendlebury - boys in one cellar, girls in the other, with space between for the Superintendent! This was the start of the ‘Methodist Society in the Height’. There were several moves to larger premises. On Good Friday 1834 the first Chapel opened on the Westwood site. In 1835, the congregation split, resulting in a new Chapel being built (Bolton Road, 1847). Both congregations enjoyed growth and progress.
Final buildings - Bolton Road 1878, Westwood 1881. The two Churches were in different Circuits and different branches of the Methodist Church - Westwood was ‘Wesleyan’, Bolton Road was ‘United’. The two became the same at Methodist Union in 1932. Eventually we became one Church, using Bolton Road premises, taking the name ‘Height Methodist Church’.
